CMU Women Finish Fifth at IUP

Sept. 15 - (INDIANA, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon women’s cross country team ran their second race of the season, and their first six kilometer race, on Saturday, September 15 at the IUP Invitational hosted by Indiana University of Pennsylvania. The team placed fifth with 119 points out of seven teams. IUP and Slippery Rock tied for first with 28 points apiece.
Running with the temperature in the mid-50s, junior Carolyn Clayton (Northampton, Mass.) led the charge for the Tartans coming in 22nd place with a time of 25:50. A pair of freshmen crossed the line next, as Rebecca Hachey (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) placed 29th for the second straight race, in a time of 26:19, and Kristen Staab (Trafford, Pa./Penn Trafford) finished 31st in 26:26.
The next three Tartans finished in a row, with senior Erin Gagnon (Lebanon, N.H.) taking 36th place in 26:44, freshman Laura McKee (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) finishing 37th (26:53), and sophomore Anna Lenhart (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) in 38th (26:56).
Junior Chrissy Krutz (Natrona Heights, Pa./Shadyside Academy) placed 43rd overall in a time of 27:27 and senior Ashley Bakelmun (Wayne, N.J.) finished 45th in 27:53.
Junior Rachel Perry (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) finished in 29:09 (56th), and freshman Amal El-Ghazaley (Knoxville, Tenn./Farragut) finished in 30:11 (59th).
The Carnegie Mellon women’s cross country team will split up in the upcoming weeks, with some of the team racing at the St. Vincent Invitational in Latrobe, Pa., on Saturday, September 22, and the rest of the team traveling to the Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa., on Friday, September 28. |
