GETTYSBURG – The Gettysburg College cross country teams put together a pair of strong showings at their own Gettysburg Invitational on Saturday as the women’s team placed fourth overall out of 14 teams and the men grabbed sixth in a 15-team field.

Dickinson College took the women’s team title with a total score of 37, placing four runners in the top 10, while Grove City CollegeR17;s Kristen Carter was the top individual finisher in the women’s 6K race with a time of 22:11.23. NCAA Division II Shippensburg University captured the men’s team crown with a total score of 52, placing three runners in the top six alone. Mike Persun of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy was the men’s individual winner, cruising the 8K course in 26:34.92.
The Gettysburg women put together a strong showing on Saturday, placing a pair of runners in the top six en route to 83 total points. Sophomore Kerrin Epstein (Moravia, N.Y./Moravia) led the way with a fourth-place finish, completing the 6K in 23:02.15. Junior Rachel Guthridge (Schwenksville, Pa./The Hill School) crossed the line just one second later in 23:03.79, good enough for sixth overall.
Senior Ellen Furnari (Hartland, Vt./Hartford) was the Bullets third-place finisher, coming in 23rd with a time of 24:31.18. Rounding out the scoring five for Gettysburg were juniors Jennie French (Portsmouth, N.H./Berwick Academy (Maine) and Becca Zabel (Frederick, Md./Urbana) in 25th (24:37.39) and 35th (24:48.21), respectively.
The men tallied 175 total points with a pair of runners finishing just outside the top 20. Sophomores Chris McCullough (Havertown, Pa./Malvern Prep) and Jeff Butterworth (Glen Mills, Pa./West Chester East) placed 20th and 21st, respectively out of 171 runners, the former posting a time of 27:15.29 and the latter 27:16.45. The remaining scorers on the men’s team all finished in the 40s with Daniel O’Neill (Monroe, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep.), Greg Cumming (Bainbridge, N.Y./Bainbridge-Guilford), and Clay Reynolds (Medway, Mass/Worcester Academy) finishing 48th (28:05.05), 50th (28:10.22), and 56th (28:23.51), respectively.
